Day 3: The Forts and the BeacheS
Breakfast at the Hotel
Meet your Savannah tour guide for a day of touring the area surrounding historic Savannah, Georgia.
As you make your way out of town, the tour will start at the Bonaventure Cemetery. Located on the site of a former plantation that burned down during a dinner party. The guests simply moved all the furniture outside to avoid the blaze, and continued to eat and celebrate as the home burned.
Continuing out to the coast, you will make a stop at Fort Pulaski. Located on Cockspur Island, Fort Pulaski is one of the best-preserved forts from the Civil War. Learn about the Siege of Fort Pulaski in 1862 and the Union military technology that forced the Confederate surrender and closed the port of Savannah.
The tour will then visit Tybee Island. Tybee Island has been of strategic importance to Georgia since the early 18th century, which made the Island’s northern tip an ideal location for a lighthouse. The lighthouse was first built in 1736 and was the tallest structure (90 feet) in America at the time. After touring the lighthouse and historic support buildings, we will head to the Tybee Pier and Pavilion to experience the resort feel of this charming island.
The guide will return to the hotel at the conclusion of the tour.
Dinner on your own OR refine your culinary skills with a cooking class at the hotel’s cooking school. The selection of cooking classes change seasonally, please contact us for the current offerings.
